The tension that outlives the room it started in
Why the body stays switched on after the stressful thing is over
The meeting ends. The email goes. The call drops, and the person on the other end is already out of your day. And yet an hour later, in a different room entirely, the body has not caught up. The jaw is still set. The shoulders are still somewhere near the ears. There is a low, humming readiness that has outlasted the thing it was readying for, and it is now aimed at nothing in particular. The child asking a reasonable question. The email that does not deserve the tone it gets.
It is easy to read this as evidence of something wrong. A steadier person, the story goes, would have let it go by now. The research offers a quieter reading, and a more precise one. The tension is not lingering because you cannot let go. It is lingering because some part of you is still in the room, replaying it.
The stressor ends. The replay does not.
The word for this in the literature is perseverative cognition: worry about what is coming, rumination about what already happened. The ordinary, mostly invisible work of a mind chewing on something. Rehearsing the comeback. Reviewing what should have been said. Running the meeting again, slightly better each time.
Here is the part that matters. The body does not distinguish cleanly between the stressor and the replay of the stressor. As far as the cardiovascular and endocrine systems are concerned, a threat rehearsed in the mind is a threat still being attended to. So the activation that mobilised for the actual event does not switch off when the event ends. It stays switched on for as long as the mind keeps the event alive.
This was first named as a hypothesis two decades ago (Brosschot, Gerin and Thayer, 2006): the idea that worry and rumination are the mechanism prolonging the body's stress response well past the moment that triggered it.
What stays switched on, and by how much
Ten years later, a meta-analysis pulled together sixty studies to ask whether the numbers bore this out (Ottaviani et al., 2016). They did. Across those studies, perseverative cognition was reliably associated with elevated blood pressure, a raised heart rate, higher cortisol, and reduced heart-rate variability (the moment-to-moment flexibility that tends to fall when the body is braced).
The effects were moderate and consistent. Not a fringe finding, not a dramatic one. A steady, measurable tax, showing up across several systems at once.
Two things about that analysis are worth holding onto. The first is that it was drawn largely from ordinary, non-clinical people. For most people, this isn't a signature of something gone wrong. It is a description of what a normal nervous system does when a normal mind keeps returning to a difficult thing. The second is what it does not show. No study here followed a person out of a hard meeting and into an unrelated dinner, watching the tension travel from one room to the next. What the evidence establishes is narrower, and MoMo would argue enough: the same activation state persists through the transition, carried not by the situation, which is over, but by the mind's ongoing engagement with it.
Not a character flaw. A billing error.
That reframes a familiar and unwelcome experience. The snapping at someone who had nothing to do with it. The inability to downshift after a hard call, so the whole evening inherits a tone it did not earn. The mechanism suggests something less damning. The body is responding accurately, to the wrong thing. It is meeting the version of the event still running in the mind, not the person actually in front of you. The output looks like temperament. The input was a replay.
The before, the after, and the window between
MoMo has written before about the near edge of this: the body that braces the night before something difficult, mobilising for a threat that has not arrived yet. This is the mirror image. Here the threat has already come and gone, and the body is still settling the account.
There is more than one way tension outlives its origin. A short night can bias the next day. A stressor can leave a window, in the hour or so after it passes, where response inhibition, the capacity to not-react, has not reset. What perseverative cognition adds is the quiet engine underneath a lot of it: not the event, but the attention we keep paying it.
What to do with this, which is nothing
Popular writing tends to reach for "stuck in fight-or-flight" or a "dysregulated nervous system," phrases that name a vague malfunction without a mechanism. This is more specific, and less alarming. Prolonged activation is not the sign of a broken system. It is the ordinary consequence of a mind still engaged with something that mattered.
There is no protocol here. Noticing that the tension aimed at the evening actually belongs to the afternoon does not switch it off.

But it might change what the tension means. Not evidence, on its own, that you cannot cope. A body still engaged with something that mattered.
