The baseline that moves while you look
Why appearance scrolling isn't really about the images
There is a small thing that happens sometimes when you look up from the phone. You have been scrolling through the same kind of images for a while, the same range of bodies and faces and rooms, and when you glance back at the actual room you are in, something has shifted in what reads as unremarkable. Nobody decided anything. You did not sit down to compare yourself to anyone. And yet the ordinary has moved a notch, and the person in the mirror on the way past it looks slightly further from a baseline you could not have named a minute ago.
That shift is the thing worth looking at. Not the images, which you probably already half-know are staged and lit and selected. The shift.
The part that isn't the scrolling
We have written before about how the mode of scrolling matters, how passive intake can leave a flatness a real break does not. This is a different mechanism, and a more specific one. It is not about how much you used the phone. It is about a particular act that happens while you use it: appearance comparison, the quiet sizing-up against what is on the screen.
The research is unusually clean on this point, because it has been tested experimentally rather than only surveyed. In two separate randomized studies, young women were shown a few minutes of fitspiration content or a neutral control, animal videos in one, art in the other. The appearance content produced more state comparison, more appearance concern, and lower mood than the control.[1][2] What matters is not that exposure had an effect. It is what carried the effect. When the researchers looked for the load-bearing variable, it was the comparison itself that mediated the shift in mood, not the minutes spent or the category of content.[2]
A diary study points the same way from a different angle. Following people day by day, it was not social-media use as such that predicted a dip. It was a person's emotional reactivity to upward comparisons specifically.[6] The comparing is the operative ingredient. The scrolling is just where it tends to happen.
I should name the samples plainly. These studies are in young women and adolescents, not in the women MoMo is mostly for, who are older. Hold the age-specific findings narrowly. What travels is the mechanism, not the exact numbers.
The much older machinery underneath
Here is where a second, unrelated body of research becomes hard to ignore, and where the central metaphor of this piece actually lives.
For over twenty years, vision scientists have documented something they call perceptual adaptation. Show the visual system a consistent range of some feature for even a short while, and it quietly recalibrates its sense of what is normal toward that range. In the foundational study, brief exposure to a facial distortion shifted what participants then judged as most normal, and most attractive, toward the distortion they had just seen. The effect held even when the test faces were shown at a different angle, which tells you it is happening above the level of the retina, somewhere the brain is doing genuine bookkeeping about what a face should look like.[9]
This is not a dusty single result. It has kept replicating, across different features and decades, up to a 2025 study on perceived lip size and an applied one in an aesthetic-practice setting.[11][10] The finding is robust and it is dumb, in the useful sense: the machinery does not care whether the input is realistic. It recalibrates toward whatever it sees a lot of.
And it does not only apply to weight or shape, which is worth saying because it keeps the point where it belongs. One study found the same awareness-and-internalization pattern predicting dissatisfaction with height, a trait no regimen touches at all.[8] The process is a general comparison-and-recalibration process, not a body-shape one.
The honest seam between the two
It would be easy, and wrong, to weld these two literatures into a single sentence: studies show scrolling resets your visual perception. No study shows that. The vision-science work used controlled single-session exposure to individual photographs over minutes. The social-media work measures self-reported comparison, internalization, and concern, related things, but not the same perceptual measure. A three-wave study of nearly two thousand people did find appearance-focused feed use predicting later appearance concern, running through comparison and internalization as serial steps.[3] That is real and prospective. It is still not a direct test of perception being recalibrated by a feed.
So the honest statement is a joined one, not a fused one. The recalibration that vision science demonstrates in the lab looks a great deal like what the comparison research is separately describing on feeds. The bridge between them is a reasonable inference, well-grounded because the mechanisms are conceptually adjacent, but it is an inference, not a proven causal chain. It seems worth more to say that clearly than to overclaim and be tidier.
One more calibration. The largest synthesis of the comparison-to-dissatisfaction link finds it genuine and bidirectional, each feeding the other over time, but small in size at the population level.[4] The felt version, in a given moment, can be much louder than that average suggests. Both are true. The effect is real, replicated, and modest, and your particular evening is allowed to feel like more than a small correlation.
What to do with a baseline that moved
Probably nothing, in the sense of a rule. This is not a discipline problem, and it was never vanity, though if the comparing has tipped into something that feels compulsive, or tangled up with eating or exercise, that's worth a real conversation with someone, not just this noticing. It is closer to what happens to anyone's eyes in a room lit one particular way for long enough. The baseline drifts, and it drifts without asking. Moving it back is not a matter of willpower. It starts, mostly, with noticing it moved at all, which is the one thing the drift is designed to hide.

Holding that noticing, so a shift in what looks normal becomes something you can see rather than a verdict you quietly pass on yourself, is the kind of continuity MoMo was built to keep. But that is a footnote. The essay is the baseline, and the way it moves while you look.
