The lump in the throat is not a figure of speech
Where a feeling lives in the body, and why the brain is the one putting it there
There is a thing that happens in the throat before a hard conversation. A tightness, a fullness, a sense that something is lodged there that will not swallow away. We have a phrase for it, a lump in the throat, and the phrase is so worn that it sounds like decoration. A figure of speech. The way we say a heavy heart, meaning nothing physical at all.
Except the throat really is doing something. So is the chest, when grief settles into it like weight. So are the shoulders, when dread arrives and pulls them up toward the ears. For a long time the standard account treated these as the body illustrating a feeling that actually lived somewhere else, up in the mind, in thought. The research points the other way. The body is not illustrating the feeling. It is doing part of it, on instructions the brain is sending.
The map you already have
The cleanest evidence for this is also the largest. A 2014 study in PNAS asked more than seven hundred people to do something disarmingly simple: colour in a blank silhouette of a body to show where they felt sensation increase or decrease during a given emotion.[2] Anger, fear, love, sadness, shame, one at a time. The striking result was not that people reported bodily sensations. It was that the maps agreed.
Anger lit the chest and the hands. Fear and anxiety concentrated in the chest. Sadness drained the limbs and gathered around the chest and throat. Love and happiness ran almost everywhere, warm and diffuse. Different emotions produced distinct, measurable topographic maps, and the maps held across the whole sample, including participants from both Western European and East Asian cultural groups. I want to be precise about that last part, because it is easy to inflate. The pattern was consistent across the two cultures tested. That is a real and interesting agreement. It is not the same as proven for all of humanity, and later work on how far emotional experience generalises across cultures has kept that question open. The honest claim is narrower and still remarkable: across two quite different populations, people located their emotions in the body in the same places.
One more caution before we go further. This method rests on self-report, on where people say they feel things. That is exactly the kind of evidence a sceptic is right to press on. Which is why the next piece matters.
Not just where it is reported
A 2024 preprint took the question into the scanner.[1] The researchers looked at whether these bodily reports of emotion correspond to anything in the brain, or whether they are a story people tell after the fact. They found that perceiving an emotion activated the primary somatosensory and motor cortices, the regions that handle bodily sensation and movement, alongside the insula, the precuneus, and medial prefrontal areas. Not only the cognitive machinery. The parts of the brain that represent the body itself.
More pointedly, the bodily reports mapped onto that neural activity in a way that could not be fully explained by how people thought about the images, or by what the images simply looked like. The body-feeling was not a caption added on top of a mental event. It was part of how the emotion was represented in the first place.
I will keep this one in proportion, because proportion is the whole discipline here. This was a single study with twenty-one participants, and it is a preprint, not yet confirmed through peer review. On its own it would be a suggestive result and no more. What gives it weight is the direction, which lines up with the much larger body-map work and with decades of anatomy pointing the same way. Small studies earn their keep by agreeing with big ones. This one does.
The frame that makes sense of both is sometimes called embodied simulation: the idea that to feel an emotion, the brain re-runs the bodily part of it, the way it would re-run a piece of a memory. Not a metaphor standing in for the feeling. A simulation that is part of the feeling. The lump in the throat is the brain rehearsing, in the body, something that belongs to sadness.
The insula, doing a different job than last time
If you have followed these essays, you have met the insula before, and I want to be careful not to blur the two appearances.
A foundational review in Nature Reviews Neuroscience describes the anterior insula as the place where signals from inside the body get gathered up into conscious feeling.[4] It is, in the author's framing, close to the answer to the question how do you feel, now. Interoceptive signals come in from the body's interior; the insula is where they become something you are aware of feeling. That is its role here: the interface between bodily sensation and the sense of an emotion.
That is not the role it played when I wrote about reframing and accepting a hard feeling. There, the insula appeared as part of the shared machinery both regulation strategies lean on. Same region, genuinely different function in the story. The brain reuses its parts, and it is easy to let a familiar name paper over a change of job. Here the insula is not regulating the feeling. It is where the feeling becomes felt.
How well anyone reads their own signals
There is a tempting next step, and it is worth walking into it slowly. If emotions are partly bodily, then perhaps the people who read their bodies most accurately feel emotions most intensely. This is close to what a lot of recent wellness language assumes when it talks about listening to the body.
The evidence says something more measured. A 2022 meta-analysis pulled together thirty studies on interoceptive accuracy, how well a person actually detects their own internal signals, against how intensely they perceive emotion.[3] The relationship was real but modest, and it had a condition attached. It showed up when emotions were experimentally induced, when something was actively stirring a feeling. At rest, it did not hold.
I find that condition quietly clarifying rather than deflating. It suggests the body-emotion link is not a dial you can read in a calm moment to learn your emotional depth. It is a coupling that comes online when there is a feeling actually moving through. Which fits the lived version: you notice the throat and the chest not while sitting quietly, but in the moment the hard thing is arriving.
Why this is worth keeping nearby
The woman these essays are written for, the one MoMo is built for, has usually been trained to treat the bodily part of a feeling as noise. As the symptom to manage so she can get back to thinking clearly. The chest tightness before the meeting is a thing to breathe away; the throat before the conversation is a thing to push past. The body, in that account, is the weather, and the mind is the work.
The research offers a gentler and more accurate reading. The body is not interrupting the emotion. It is, in part, carrying it. When the throat tightens, that is not a malfunction sitting between her and the feeling. It is closer to the feeling arriving in the medium the brain actually uses to make it real.
I want to be careful about what that does and does not license. It does not mean every sensation is a message to be decoded, or that reading the body harder makes anyone wiser or calmer. And I am deliberately staying away from the language, popular right now, that treats the body as a ledger where everything is stored and scored. That framing has swallowed a lot of separate ideas, and the specific science here is narrower and more careful than the slogan. What it says is modest and, I think, enough: the sensation is not separate from the emotion. It is part of how the emotion is made.
There is no instruction in that. Nothing to do, no body scan to perform correctly, no signal to track. Only, maybe, a small change in how the next lump in the throat gets read. Not as a thing between you and the feeling. As part of the feeling itself, running exactly as built.
That noticing, the way a sensation in the body and an emotion in the mind turn out to be one thing rather than two, is the kind of thread MoMo is built to hold across days. But that is a footnote. The essay is the map, and the finding that the body is the medium, not the afterthought.
